DKSH Japan Supports Yuzu Harvest in Kochi Prefecture Exploring Yuzu’s Global Potential

DKSH Japan is reinforcing its commitment to sustainability by supporting yuzu harvesting in Kochi Prefecture to address labor shortages and support sustainable agriculture. Through this program, DKSH Japan not only aids local yuzu producers but also enhances the global reach of Japan’s yuzu by exporting high-quality yuzu products to Europe.

Tokyo, Japan, November 15, 2024 — DKSH Japan reinforces its commitment to sustainability by supporting yuzu harvesting in Kochi Prefecture, addressing labor shortages faced by local producers while promoting sustainable agriculture and revitalizing the regional economy. Since 2021, DKSH has actively contributed to this initiative, reflecting its dedication to social impact and agricultural heritage.

Strengthening Regional Agriculture with Community Engagement

This initiative aligns with DKSH’s mission of “Enriching People’s Lives” and its “Social Impact Strategy”, which emphasizes creating tangible benefits for local communities. By volunteering labor support, DKSH helps alleviate workforce challenges for Kochi’s yuzu producers while fostering collaborative relationships that enhance the long-term sustainability of regional agriculture.

Shigeru Ishihara, Head of Country Leadership at DKSH Japan, stated:
"Our initiatives extend beyond business, reflecting our commitment to forging lasting partnerships with local communities. We are honored to support Kochi’s yuzu industry, preserving Japan’s agricultural traditions while strengthening local economies."

Expanding Yuzu’s Global Presence: A Rising Star in Europe

Kochi Prefecture is Japan’s leading yuzu producer, accounting for approximately 51% of the country’s 23,000-ton output in 2021, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. The distinct flavor and aroma of yuzu have driven demand in the European market, particularly in France, where exports from Kochi reached 744 million yen in 2022, a remarkable 74.5% year-over-year increase, as reported by JETRO Kochi.

DKSH Japan has been exporting premium yuzu products, such as juice and oil, since 2014. With rising European demand, DKSH has strengthened local distribution through DKSH France, offering an expanded range of yuzu juice, oil, and powder for diverse applications in the food and beverage sector.

Commitment to Sustainability and Global Reach

By supporting local producers in Kochi and exporting the unique qualities of Japanese yuzu to international markets, DKSH Japan exemplifies its dedication to sustainable agriculture and cultural preservation. These efforts not only enhance the global appeal of Japanese yuzu but also contribute to the economic vitality of Kochi Prefecture.

Through its continuous support and innovative approach, DKSH reaffirms its role as a bridge between tradition and global innovation, enriching lives and promoting sustainability worldwide.
